How many probiotics does my dog need? A weight-based guide

2 June 2026 · Written by Gokul Prakash , Founder

Probiotics come with a number on the label — usually stated in billions of CFU — and that number can feel baffling. CFU stands for colony forming units: the count of live bacteria in each serving. More is not automatically better, but too little may not do much either. So how do you find the right amount for your dog?

The honest answer is: body weight is the most useful starting point, and the product label plus your vet’s advice are the finishing line.

Why dose matters

Your dog’s gut is a living ecosystem of bacteria. A probiotic works by adding helpful strains to that ecosystem every day in large enough numbers to make a difference. Too few CFU and they get outnumbered before they can settle. Too many, piled on too fast, can cause temporary loose stools or gas, especially in smaller dogs.

Consistent daily dosing matters more than any single large dose. One generous serving a week will do far less than a steady, appropriate amount given every day. This is because the gut is dynamic: helpful bacteria need to be replenished regularly to maintain their presence. Think of it like watering a plant rather than giving it one big bucket and hoping for the best.

General weight-based daily ranges

The following ranges come from veterinary nutritional sources and are intended as educational context. They are not a prescription. Always follow your product’s label and, for dogs with a health condition, check with your vet before adjusting anything.

Dog sizeApproximate weightGeneral daily CFU range
Toy / extra-smallUnder 10 kg1 to 3 billion CFU
Small to medium10 to 34 kg3 to 6 billion CFU
LargeOver 34 kg6 to 10 billion CFU

For dogs with active gastrointestinal issues or other health concerns, some vets recommend higher amounts for a short period. This is therapeutic use and should only happen under veterinary supervision.

TrueWag serving guide

Each TrueWag chew delivers 6 billion CFU from 5 vet-formulated strains in a 3.5g chicken-flavoured chew. One tub contains 30 chews.

Based on weight, here is how to use them:

  • Up to 11 kg (small breeds, e.g. Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Indian Spitz): 1 chew daily, 6 billion CFU.
  • 12 to 34 kg (medium breeds, e.g. Labrador, Indian Pariah, Cocker Spaniel): 2 chews daily, 12 billion CFU.
  • Over 34 kg (large breeds, e.g. German Shepherd, Golden Retriever): 3 chews daily, 18 billion CFU.
  • Or as advised by your vet, which always takes precedence.

If your dog is new to probiotics, start at the lower end of the range for the first week or two and increase gradually. This gives the gut time to adjust without any short-lived digestive upset.

A few things worth knowing

More is not always better. Probiotics are a supplement, not a medicine. Giving double the amount will not double the benefit, and in small or sensitive dogs it can cause soft stools temporarily. Follow the label.

Consistency beats intensity. A daily habit at the right dose is more useful than sporadic high doses. Try giving the chew at the same time each day, ideally with or just after a meal, so it becomes part of the routine.

Some dogs need individual guidance. Puppies under 8 weeks, pregnant or nursing dogs, and dogs with serious illness or on immunosuppressant medication should have any supplement discussed with a vet first. This is general educational information, not medical advice.

If you want to understand why the strains and CFU count matter as much as the dose, the science behind TrueWag’s formula and the full ingredients list go into more detail. You can also read about whether probiotics actually help dogs and how TrueWag compares to other options available in India.

Ready to start?

If you have the weight and you have the answer, the practical next step is to check where TrueWag is available and pick up the first tub. One tub lasts a month for dogs up to 11 kg on one chew a day.

For any questions about your specific dog, the FAQs page covers the most common ones, and your vet is always the right person to call for therapeutic advice.

Frequently asked questions

What does CFU mean on a probiotic label?

CFU stands for colony forming units. It is the count of live, active bacteria in each serving. A higher CFU means more live bacteria being delivered to your dog's gut with each dose.

Can I give my dog too many probiotics?

Probiotics are not a medicine, and a large single dose is unlikely to cause serious harm. However, exceeding the recommended amount, especially for small dogs, can cause temporary soft stools or gas while the gut adjusts. More is not automatically better. Follow the product label and your vet's advice.

How long does one tub of TrueWag last?

Each tub contains 30 chews. At 1 chew per day (the dose for dogs up to 11 kg), one tub lasts a full month. Larger dogs on 2 to 3 chews a day will go through a tub faster.

Should I give probiotics with food or on an empty stomach?

Giving probiotics with or just after a meal is generally recommended. Food provides a buffer that may support the survival of live bacteria as they pass through the stomach. Check the product label for any specific guidance.
