Why heat kills most dog probiotics (and what 'heat-stable' really means)

Live bacteria are fragile by nature

Probiotics are live microorganisms. That is the whole point. But living things can die, and probiotic bacteria are surprisingly easy to kill.

  • High temperatures — heat above around 40–50°C damages or kills most conventional strains
  • Stomach acid — bacteria that survive manufacturing still have to survive the acidic environment of a dog’s stomach before reaching the gut
  • Time and humidity — even at room temperature, bacterial counts drop gradually over shelf life

When a product works, it is because enough live bacteria survive all three of those hurdles and actually reach the intestine. When it does not work, it is usually because the bacteria never made it that far.

Why manufacturing kills most conventional probiotics

Most dog probiotic chews are made the same way biscuits are — they are baked. Baking uses temperatures well above 100°C. At those temperatures, conventional probiotic strains simply die. The bacteria that were alive when the ingredient was added are, for the most part, dead by the time the chew comes out of the oven.

Some manufacturers spray probiotics onto the surface of the chew after baking, which is better but still leaves bacteria exposed to heat during storage and transit.

Spore-forming strains are a fundamentally different type of bacteria. Species like Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis can form a protective shell around themselves called an endospore when conditions become hostile. Inside that shell, the bacteria can survive temperatures, dryness, and acidity that would kill conventional strains outright. When conditions become favourable again — for example, inside a dog’s gut — they germinate and become active.

The second factor is the manufacturing process. Even with spore-forming strains, a high-heat baking process creates unnecessary stress. A cold extrusion process — which shapes the chew at low temperatures without baking — removes that risk and preserves bacterial viability through manufacturing.

Heat stability matters especially in India, where ambient temperatures during summer, during warehouse storage, and during last-mile delivery can easily exceed 40°C. A product that survives manufacturing can still lose significant viability sitting in a hot delivery truck or warehouse.
